About Us

In the year 1666, when Samuel Pepys recorded in his famous diary the details of the Great Fire of London, a group of brothers by the name of Gundry established a company to manufacture ropes and sails at Bridport on the coast of Dorset, in south-west England.

More than three centuries later, in 1968, Bridport-Gundry Ltd. went into partnership with James McLeod, a retired fisherman in Killybegs, Ireland, to open a netmaking factory there to supply the local fleet. In 1974, his friend and neighbour, Albert Swan set up another net firm in Killybegs to specialise in midwater trawl technology. Swan Net Ltd. expanded rapidly in Ireland Britain and further afield, especially in North America and Iceland.

The company established by James McLeod was thriving also and had earned a solid reputation at home and overseas. In 1999, Swan Net Ltd. took the overall prize in the “Marketing Campaign” section of the Icelandic Fisheries Awards competition. As a result of the international awareness created by winning this prestigious award, the Hampidjan group, a powerful Icelandic-based concern with interests throughout the world, acquired a shareholding in Swan Net Ltd. the following year. In 2002, Gundrys Ltd and Swan Net Ltd., came together within the Hampidjan Group to form Swan Net-Gundry Ltd.

The new company with the long history is today one of the strongest netmaking concerns in the world, offering a wide range of products and services to customers near and far. We supply static gear such as gill nets and pots to small inshore fishermen on the Irish and British Atlantic and North Sea coasts. We stock all the accessories from boots and clothing to chains, ropes, swivels and shackles.

For our bigger customers, we design and manufacture midwater trawls and bottom trawls to the highest standards. Our markets include Ireland, Scotland, England, Shetland, the U.S. East Coast, the U.S. Alaska fleet and Chile in South America. We have also delivered to customers in Newfoundland, Australia, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Guatemala, Denmark, Norway, Iceland and Argentina.

The secret of our success is knowledge and experience of the industry and a passion for excellence in materials and workmanship. Several of our directors, managers and workers have first-hand experience of the fishing industry, as skippers, owners or crew. This knowledge is invaluable in understanding customers’ requirements and in perfecting the performance of our nets.

As a member of the Hampidjan group of companies, we are part of an international network, linking us to important research and developments in materials and design of netting, ropes and chandlery. It is our intention to grow our product range and develop new markets as well as consolidating the existing customer base in Ireland, Britain, Europe, South America and the United States.

COASTAL CAGES

FISHFARM NETS
We manufacture and repair all types and sizes of fishfarm nets at our Coastal Cages Depot at Ballymoon, Kilcar, Co. Donegal. Sites on the west coast of Ireland are among the most environmentaly challenged in the world. As a result of excellent water exchange and filtration, they produce farmed salmon of a quality comparable with the wild fish.

Designing and making nets for these conditions is a challenge which we have been meeting since the beginning of Irish aquaculture. Our materials and workmanship are regularly tested to extreme limits and are not found wanting. We can supply you with nets to suit all shapes and sizes of flotation units in any sea conditions.

SAFETY NETS
Demand is increasing for safety nets to pevent injury and loss of life and to catch falling object on construction sites. Our safety nets, tailored to meet your specific requirements, are manufactured from top quality materials and are quality tested to meet the highest national and international standards. Whatever size of construction you are undertaking, we can provide all the safety nets you need. Prices are based on the materials used and the size of net required.

SPORTS NETS
We manufacture nets for GAA and Association football and carry a stock of standard sizes in both. We also supply ball-stop nets for behind the goal areas, as well as nets for badminton, tennis and basketball. We are happy to make nets for customers’ specific requirements. No order too small or too big.

AGRICULTURE / HORTICULTURE
We supply quality nets to suit all the requirements of agriculture and horticulture, including nets to protect fruit and vegetables from marauding birds, nets to prevent birds flying into barns and lofts and heavy-duty nets for covering silage bales, hay stacks or other stores.
